International Union of Tenants - IUT

The International Union of Tenants (IUT) is a non-profit organization for tenant organizations around the world.


IUT was founded in 1926 in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 1956, the head office has been in Stockholm, Sweden, and there has been a representative office in Brussels since 2008. There are 74 member companies in 51 countries and we are financed by membership fees. The Tenants' Charter is a guide for all international tenants' associations.


Housing issues need to be addressed regionally, nationally and internationally. Affordable and reliable housing is one of the cornerstones of peace and security and a fundamental pillar in all democratic societies. Housing security is also essential for people's mobility. Lack of affordable housing and homelessness have a major impact on social isolation. Tenants should have the right to participate in decisions about everything about their home.


Objectives of IUT

    Aiming to make everyone aware of the right to suitable housing and a reliable and healthy local environment at an affordable and fair rental price. Housing democracy and the right to tenant participation. Rent insurance and rent restrictions. Fiscal neutrality regardless of the type of occupation. No discrimination with regard to age, gender , race, ethnicity, disability, sexuality or religion.


Activities of IUT

    Facilitates and organizes tenant association cooperation, shares information and experiences. Communicates news through the website. Publishes regular newsletters Works with EU institutions and disseminates information. Analyzes and prioritizes policy issues. Plans and participates in seminars, conferences and events. Organizes working groups. Follows current research and provides.Works with member organizations to identify issues and influence decisions that affect tenants and require international cooperation.Coordinates International Day of Tenants, the first Monday in October each year.Partners with United Nations agencies, such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the United Nations Center for Human Habitat – Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya. Partners with ENHR – European Network for Housing Research and APNHR – Asia-Pacific Network for Housing Research. Member of several EU networks and working groups related to housing, including including the European Housing Forum, and the Housing Partnership for the EU Urban Agenda.
